Abuja, Nov 10: A suicide bomb attack has killed 47 students and injured 79 others during a school assembly on Monday in the north-east Nigerian town of Potiskum.

According to police, Islamist extremist group Boko Haram is believed to have caused the massacre.

Emmanuel Ojukwu, a police spokesman, has reportedly told a news agency, “There was an explosion detonated by a suicide bomber. We have 47 dead and 79 injured.”

A suicide bomber disguised in a school uniform caused the blast, the news agency quoting survivors said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Yobe State, a territory close to the stronghold of Boko Haram Sunni Muslim militants, who have staged a five-year insurgency.

Boko Haram, which is against Western education, has attacked schools, abducted hundreds of students and killed thousands in its fight for an Islamist state.
