New Delhi, June 26: Attempting to downplay former IPL boss Lalit Modi’s latest revelation wherein he claimed to have met Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra in London, the Congress Party on Friday said there was nothing wrong with meeting an individual at a restaurant.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: “Neither Priyanka Gandhi nor Robert Vadra have ever interacted socially with Lalit Modi. If you see an individual in a restaurant full of people, it is neither a crime nor it is morally wrong.”
He further said the government should instead focus on the more important and real issues.
He said: “We request the Modi Government and their black money stooges to answer the real issues that people want. We want Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to answer.”
In a new turn of events, Lalit Modi took to Twitter to claim that he met Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra in London last year.
The former IPL chief tweeted: “Happy to meet the Gandhi Family in London. I had run into Robert and Priyanka separately in a restaurant – they were with Timmy Sarna. He has my no. They can call me. Will tell them what I feel about them exactly.”
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who on Friday came to the defence of Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra in the Lalit Modi row, asked if it was a crime to meet the former IPL chief.
Digvijaya asked: “Is it a crime if Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra met Lalit Modi in London? Is Priyanka Gandhi holding any official position and did she recommend anybody? How is she in the wrong?”
Digvijaya also alleged that people who helped Lalit Modi on paper are now using Robert Vadra and Priyanka Gandhi as their defence.
The BJP, however, said the Congress Party should come clean over why the Gandhi family is in constant touch with former IPL chief Lalit Modi.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said: “Today, when certain tweets are coming to the fore-front, we come to learn that Lalit Modi had a meeting with the Gandhi family yesterday. We want to ask as to why the Gandhi family is in constant touch with Lalit Modi.”
“Forty years of emergency. India has just seen the blackest day of emergency. On this occasion, would it not have been apt for the Congress family i.e. the Gandhi family to be in India, to apologise for the emergency that was put during Indira Gandhi’s regime. Rather than that, the whole of Gandhi family is in foreign land meeting Lalit Modi,” he added.
Another BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said: “The Congress Party simply cannot get away, saying there was no discussion, there was no interaction by Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra in their so called ‘accidental meeting’ with Lalit Modi.”
Rao said: “Everyone knows that Robert Vadra is a businessman, who is involved in shady deals, shady transactions. So, was he involved in any business transactions with Lalit Modi or was Vadra trying to weaken and soften cases on Lalit Modi by having certain kind of transactions with him? These are questions that are naturally bound to arise because of the shady character of the people involved and Congress’ history of indulging in such transactions.”
Narasimha Rao further said it was high time that the Congress Party came out clean on the matter.
