New Delhi, July 19: Five people were killed and over eight others injured after a five-storey building collapsed in West Delhi’s Vishnu Garden area on Saturday night.
According to police officials, nine people, including four children, have been pulled out from the rubble; however, many are feared to be trapped.
Eight fire tenders have reached the spot. Rescue operations are also being carrying out the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Those injured have been rushed to the hospital.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jarnail Singh blamed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for the collapse, adding “This is due to the MCD’s corruption. They are playing with the lives of the people.”
Earlier on Saturday night, a senior Fire Department official said: “we received a call about the building collapse at 9.07 pm and immediately eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot to rescue the affected people. It is a four-storey building and many people were feared trapped.”
DCP of West Delhi Pushpendra Kumar said NDRF, local police and civil administration were carrying out rescue operations.
An official said that the building caved in as digging was going on at an adjacent plot for construction of a new structure. A large number of crowd that gathered at the spot hampered rescue operations, officials said.
