Gandhinagar, Oct 29: Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a premier engineering & construction company, has been assigned the task of constructing the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, near Narmada Dam in central Gujarat. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Monday issued Rs 2,989-crore work order to the company.
The Gujarat chief minister reportedly said the project would help bring in investment of Rs 6,000 crore in the tribal-dominated region for its extensive development.
Awarding the work order for the tender to L&T, Anandiben Patel said this would be the first step towards paying a befitting tribute to Sardar Patel who unified the country. Patel said the project would not only benefit the tribal region fiinancially but would also bring the local residents into the mainstream.
The Statue of Unity project is the dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It envisages the construction of 182-metre tall statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Sadhu Island, 3.3 km away from the Narmada Dam, in Narmada district.
Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) has been working on the project’s implementation. It had floated a global tender to construct and maintain the statue.
The tender has eventually been granted to L&T which will build the statue at the cost of Rs 2,989 crore. The project is likely to be over by 2018.
