New Delhi, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa on their victory in Canada Open doubles title.

The Prime Minister took to twitter to say: “Very proud of @P9Ashwini & @Guttajwala for the wonderful victory at the Canada Open. Congratulations to the brilliant sportspersons.”

The Indian shuttlers won the doubles title after upstaging the top-seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in the summit clash in Calgary, Canada.

The Commonwealth Games silver medalist pair overcame the Dutch duo 21-19, 21-16 in a thrilling final showdown that lasted over 35 minutes.

Although the Indian pair had to face stiff competition from their opponents to secure the first set, the second game began on a promising note as they were 15-6 at one stage.

The Dutch pair then produced a remarkable turnaround as they wrestled their way back to level the set; however, Jwala and Ashwini did not wilt under pressure and subsequently eased to an emphatic victory.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist pair triumphed 21-19, 21-16.
