New Delhi, Dec 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed delight at the Bharat Ratna being conferred on Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Expressing his happiness, the Prime Minister said: “Bharat Ratna being conferred on Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya and Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a matter of great delight. Country`s highest honour to these illustrious stalwarts is a fitting recognition of their service to the Nation.”
The PM Modi further said: “Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya is remembered as a phenomenal scholar and freedom fighter who lit the spark of national consciousness among people. Atal ji means so much to everyone. A guide, inspiration and giant among giants. His contribution to India is invaluable.”
Earlier a statement from President Pranab Mukherjee’s office said: “The President has been pleased to award Bharat Ratna to Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) and to Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”
The announcement comes a day before the birthday of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who turns 90 on Thursday, Christmas Day, being celebrated by the government as ‘good governance day’.
The Bharat Ratna for Dr Madan Mohan Malaviya, the freedom fighter and educationist popularly known as ‘Mahamana’, was one of the promises made by PM Modi in his poll campaign during general elections.
The Banaras Hindu University, founded by Dr Malaviya, is in the Prime Minister’s constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Doordarshan National will telecast two special documentaries on the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and the birth anniversary of well known freedom fighter and academic Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya on Thursday.
In connection with the birth anniversary of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, National Good Governance Day and Christmas, All India Radio will broadcast various programmes in different formats at the national and local levels.
