Ahmedabad, Aug 25: After widespread incidents of violence across the state of Gujarat, curfew was imposed in Mehsana city and the towns of Unjha and Visnagar in the district, the collector of Mehsana said here on Tuesday.
“Curfew has been imposed in Mehsana city as well as Unjha and Visnagar towns after incidents of violence in Mehsana district,” Mehsana District Collector Lochan Sehra said. Mehsana is around 90 km from here.
Earlier, Hardik Patel, who was leading the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, demanding OBC reservation for Patel Community, was detained by the police.
According to reports, the police used lathi-charge on protestors and then Patel was detained from the protest site.
The protest had turned violent as large groups of Patel Community youths went around on various roads of the city on their vehicles wielding sticks to enforce the bandh. They also smashed bus windows and pelted stones.
Patel Community protesters set two motorbikes on fire and damgaged public property at Shahibaug area of the city after the release of their leader Hardik Patel. They also damaged public property and set a bus on fire in Surat.
Meanwhile, the district administration also called in paramilitary forces to control the situation.
When asked about the number of incidents of violence in Mehsana district, the collector said that around two to three incidents of violence occurred.
Mob blocked roads in the towns of Unjha and Visnagar, after which curfew was imposed to control the situation, the collector said, adding that no casualty has been reported so far.
