Kolkata, Dec 12: The CBI on Friday evening arrested West Bengal Transport Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra in Saradha chit fund scam.
According to reports, the West Bengal Minister was arrested after the CBI interrogated him for nearly five hours over the post he was holding in Saradha Group of Companies.
Earlier in the morning, Madan Mitra appeared before the CBI in connection with the case. He was arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, misappropriation and for deriving undue financial benefits from the Saradha Group.
Mitra was earlier summoned on November 18 by the CBI in November but he failed to appear due to health reasons. Mitra was discharged from the state-run SSKM Hospital on Nov 26.
Mitra, who denied any involvement in the scam, had asserted he would cooperate with the CBI whenever it called him for questioning.
According to reports, the minister had appeared as a guest in several Saradha programmes where he had praised the group promoter and scam kingpin, Sudipta Sen, for generating employment.
The CBI had earlier grilled Mitra’s former confidential assistant Bapi Karim. Mitra is the second state minister after Textile Minister Shyamapada Mukherjee to be grilled by the CBI.
In the related development with the Saradha chit fund scam, a city court extended till December 22 the judicial custody of suspended Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh, company’s head Sudipta Sen and his associate Debjani Mukherjee.
Sessions judge Arvind Mishra directed that the judicial remand of Ghosh, Sen and Mukherjee would be extended till December 22 on a prayer by the CBI which is probing the scam on a Supreme Court order.
The judge called for the records of Manoj Negel, a senior official of Saradha Group, who was arrested by the state police and handed over to CBI after it took over the reins of investigation last July.
Negel is in judicial remand and has not been named in the charge sheet filed by the CBI in connection with the case.
