New York, June 20: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in New York on Saturday for the International Yoga Day celebrations.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted to share this information.
He tweeted: “Namaste to the Big Apple! EAM @SushmaSwaraj arrives in JFK Airport, for First International Day of Yoga celebrations.”
The External Affairs Minister will participate in the International Yoga Day event being organised by the Indian Mission at the United Nations. The event will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon among others.
Earlier, the External Affairs Minister had tweeted about her visit to New York: “Leaving for New York.”
In first of its kind, about 200 crore people across the globe are expected to participate in the inaugural first day of International Yoga Day to be celebrated on Sunday.
The yoga celebrations are being organised after the United Nations had in December last year declared June 21 as International Yoga Day.
The proposal was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the UN General Assembly.
