Rajahmundry/New Delhi, July 14: Three pilgrims were killed and two others injured when a stampede broke out at Pushkar ghat on the banks of Godavari river on the first day of ‘Pushkaram’ festival on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives due to the stampede in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a large number of people were moving forward to take a holy dip in the river.
Deputy SP, East Godavari district, Kulasekhar, reportedly said the deceased are senior citizens and police are yet to establish their identity.
‘Godavari ‘Pushkaram’ is the once in 144-year event dedicated to worshipping rivers in the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The Prime Minister has discussed the situation with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, an official statement said.
the Prime Minister said: “Deeply pained at the loss of lives due to stampede at Rajahmundry. My condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers with the injured. I spoke to CM N. Chandrababu Naidu and discussed the situation with him. The State Government is working to restore normalcy”.
